Mister Miracle Returns this Wednesday!
And it’s written by Tom King!
Scott Free is the greatest escape artist that ever lived. So great that he escaped Granny Goodness’ gruesome orphanage and the dangers of Apokolips to travel across galaxies and set up a new life on Earth with his wife, the former female fury known as Big Barda. Using the stage alter ego of Mister Miracle, he has made a career for himself showing off his acrobatic escape techniques. He even caught the attention of the Justice League, which counted him among its ranks.
You might say Scott Free has everything…so why isn’t it enough? Mister Miracle has mastered every illusion, achieved every stunt, pulled off every trick—except one. He has never escaped death. Is it even possible? Our hero is going to have to kill himself if he wants to find out.
Written by Tom King (BATMAN) and illustrated by Mitch Gerads (The Punisher), this is a MISTER MIRACLE unlike any you’ve read before.
Mister Miracle and the New Gods return to DC Comics this Wednesday, August 9th! Who else will return? How will they fit into Rebirth and Dark Days: Metal? And does this mean that we’re also seeing the return of DC’s most notorious villain… Funky Flashman?
Who is Mister Miracle?
Mister Miracle is one of the New Gods, created by the late, great Jack Kirby back in 1971. He is the son of Highfather, the leader of the New Gods of New Genesis. Shortly after he was born, he was swapped with Orion, Darkseid’s son. This arrangement was put in place to assure that Apokolips and New Genesis would never wage war against each other.
Mister Miracle (or Scott) was raised by Granny Goodness on Apokolips with no knowledge of his actual heritage. He felt like an outsider there and eventually rejected the doctrine of pain and terror taught there. He escaped the planet and eventually made his way to Earth. On Earth, he took up the stage name Mister Miracle. He learned stagecraft and became the greatest escape performer on the planet — by cheating. He had a mother box hidden on his costume.
Like all New Gods, he is basically immortal. He doesn’t age. He’s impervious to pretty much everything. He has near unlimited cosmic power. He’s extremely intelligent and was taught many of the universes’ vast secrets from his mentors on Apokolips. He trained in all manner of warfare from his time there, though he rejected these teachings and became a pacifist. He joined the Justice League International, but later retired to the suburbs with his wife and fellow New God Big Barda.
So why is this book so special?
This is the New Gods’ first major appearance in the DC Universe since Rebirth. Mister Miracle has always been a fan favorite. He was one of the first major superheroes to break out of the routine of the day to day crime-fighting and actually retire. (Of course it doesn’t work.)
But of course the big seller here is this book’s amazing creative team. Tom King and Mitch Gerads are reuniting to make this one special. The last-time these two teamed up they gave us Sheriff of Babylon.
If you’re not keeping up with Tom King these days, you’re not keeping up with comics. Here are a few things he’s been up to.
- Batman (2016-) Yes, that Batman. He’s been writing Batman since Rebirth launched.
- The Vision (2016) The best Marvel book of 2016. Tom King won the Eisner Award for this comic. It’s that good. He also won the annual Best Writer from IGN.
- Sheriff of Babylon (2016-) If the preview link in the paragraph above didn’t hook you, nothing will.
- also: Robin War, Darkseid War, Omega Men, Grayson
- Sheriff of Babylon (2016-) Again, just look at that preview. Heck, we’ll link it again.
- The Punisher (2014-2015)
