The Rat Queens return on March 1st

Disclaimer: Area 52 prides itself on being a family-friendly comic store, so I feel obligated to put this out there. Rat Queens is a great book, but it’s not one for the kids. It includes adult themes, contains crude and vulgar material, and may even contain a few images I can’t publish on this site. But it is also intelligent, hilarious, insightful, and even occasionally touching which makes it a good read. It definitely gets my recommendation.

The Rat Queens are returning with a brand new Number 1 on March 1st after nearly a year-long hiatus.

Who are the Rat Queens:

The Rat Queens are the honey badgers of the D&D-inspired adventuring world. They’re female fantasy ass-kickers. They’re hard drinkers. They party hard. They are the crazy adventuring group your party always devolves into after a session or two of trying to play it serious. They are the Rat Queens:

  • Hannah – rockabilly elven mage who gives no… cares

  • Violet – hipster dwarven warrior who shaved her beard to spite her family’s traditions
  • Dee – atheist human cleric (formerly in a cult devoted to the N’Rygoth the flying squid god)
  • Betty – the happy hippie halfling thief

  • Braga – the newest addition, an orc warrior; formerly a member of the Peaches, the Rat Queens main rivals

Who is this book for?

  • This book is definitely for adults. Kids should go nowhere near this.
  • This book is for people who love D&D, Pathfinder, or other fantasy tabletop adventures.
  • This book is for people looking for strong female characters who don’t feel a need to constantly remind everyone that they’re strong female characters.
  • This book is for people who love the counter-culture, go against social norms, and want to be themselves instead of what people say they should be.
  • People with a high tolerance for four letter words.

So, what’s the deal with the new number 1?

Rat Queens was originally launched back in September 2013 to critical acclaim. In the middle of their run, they lost their artist (Google it if you’re really interested), and the book just wasn’t the same. They went on hiatus for a while to get their stuff together. Eventually, their stuff did indeed come together. The new comic is a soft reboot of the series as well as a continuation of the original run. It’s a great jumping on point for new fans and everyone who enjoyed the original 16-issue run.

Here is the official solicitation:

“CAT KINGS AND OTHER GARYS,” Part One-NEW STORY ARC! The Rat Queens are back! Betty, Violet, Dee, Braga, and Hannah return! Palisade is still a rat-infested troll’s ass, and everyone still hates Gary. It’s been a while since the Queens have done a good slaughter, so join them as they get back to the basics of killing monsters and drinking away the profits! A fresh, soft reboot to the head for the Rat Queens with artist OWEN GIENI!

New Comics (Jan 14)

First things first. Remember, you can always see the list of new release comics on our website at

That said, this week is looking to be something special. There are lots of great comics coming out without even mentioning a certain sci-fi space opera. I had a hard time trimming down the list, but here is my attempt at some highlights:

All-New Captain America #3

All-New Captain America #3

(W) Rick Remender (A/CA) Stuart Immonen

I admit I haven’t been following the All-New Captain America (yet!), but any time you get a cover with the Captain punching out Red Skull (or close enough), you know the story is probably worth it. Here’s the blurb from Marvel:

This is it! The new generations meet–Captain America vs Sin, daughter of the Red Skull!  The truth in regards to the blood of equalization is revealed, but Hydra’s proliferation is too wide, there is no stopping them now.  Nomad stands tall against the ruthless might of one of Cap’s oldest foes!

Arrow Season 2.5 #4

Arrow Season 2.5 #4

Publisher: DC COMICS
(W) Marc Guggenheim, Keto Shimizu (A) Joe Bennett & Various

Ever wonder what happens in between the seasons of Arrow?

After battling a small army of Blood’s followers, the Arrow finds himself face-to-face with the Huntress! But what is she doing in Starling City? And why does she want Oliver dead??

Batgirl #38

Batgirl #38

Publisher: DC COMICS
(W) Cameron Stewart, Brendan Fletcher (A) Babs Tarr (CA) Cameron Stewart

More Batgirl? Yes. Please.

Things are going surprisingly well in Batgirl’s new life! But nothing good ever lasts long in Gotham City – and the other yellow boot is about to drop…hard!

Fables:  The Wolf Among Us #1

Publisher: DC COMICS (Vertigo)
(W) Matthew Sturges & Various (A) Stephen Sadowski, Travis Moore (CA) Chrissie Zullo

This is one of those rare cases where the comic based on the video game based on the comic is actually good!

Even before the first issue of FABLES, there were stories to be told, shadowy avenues to explore, and lives hanging in the balance! Bigby Wolf has seen plenty in his time as Sheriff of Fabletown…but nothing can prepare him for this…

It all starts with a simple domestic disturbance. But when Bigby learns that his old nemesis, the Woodsman who has an axe to grind, is part of the scene, things go downhill fast. And how will Bigby and Snow White keep their heads long enough to crack the case when they get caught up in a grisly murder mystery?

 Rat Queens Special: Braga #1

Rat Queens Special: Braga #1

(W) Kurtis J. Wiebe (A) Tess Fowler (CA) Roc Upchurch

Looking for your Rat Queens fix? The current run story will continue in a few weeks. In the meantime, here’s…

Before joining the Peaches, Braga was destined to become the greatest leader of her people. But a life changing decision proved too controversial for even her most devout followers. A former life paved on the bodies of her enemies left behind…what choice was worth losing everything?

Featuring guest artist TESS FOWLER!

 S.H.I.E.L.D. #2

(W) Mark Waid (A) Humberto Ramos (CA) Julian Totino Tedesco

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D team up with Marvel Girl. That should be enough for you right there, but here’s Marvel’s take all the same.

Why has SHIELD agent Jemma Simmons gone undercover at the Coles Academic High School in Jersey City? Maybe it has something to do with the all-new Ms Marvel and the most dangerous lunch meal ever served.

and finally, a comic based on an obscure 1970’s Sci-Fi space opera:

Star Wars #1
